Abstract

Excess soil stress may lead to an additional settlement or shear failure of the soil, which in both cases, causes damage to the structure. Therefore, geotechnical and structural engineers who design the foundation must evaluate the bearing capacity of the soil. Most of the foundations are implemented on unsaturated soils, and using the relations, due to considering the soil as saturated and with lower shear strength, leads to conservative results and is cost-intensive. This study discusses the optimization of the bearing capacity of shallow foundations and a comparison between deterministic and probabilistic methods. In this study, the bearing capacity of shallow foundations using the Monte Carlo method and constructive solutions to improve shallow foundations’ performance.
